Experiments Useful for the Cure of Mens' Minds

This limited edition artist’s portfolio and book was designed and produced by Lumino Editions in collaboration with the painter Jacquelyn McBain.  

The project features a handmade clamshell box which houses a collection of pigment prints each signed and numbered by the artist. Each print is presented in a folder of archival Japanese paper with the title of the piece printed letterpress on the front. The project also includes a handbound book printed letterpress which features texts relating to each image in the collection, all reflecting the artist's interest in natural history and religion. The typographic style alludes to the aesthetics of books of the late European Renaissance another important influence on the artist.

Box dimensions: 2 x 14 x 14" / custom designed and handbound by John Balkwill, Lumino Editions /  imported Japanese book cloth, fine art archival papers and materials were utilized in the production / text typeset in Garamond and Trajan and printed letterpress from photopolymer plates on a Vandercook UN-I press / created in an edition limited to 60 copies for Cairngorm Press.
